Now I\u2019ve been a pick guy for so long I\u2019m afraid to play fingerstyle!\u201d Marrying savage hooks to technical prowess, Jon Modell is proof of just how heavy a 5-string bass can be in modern metal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Perched proudly over the experimental metal scene somewhere between the pounding rhythms of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/meshuggah\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/meshuggah\">Meshuggah<\/a> and the technicality of early \u201980s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/frank-zappa\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/frank-zappa\">Frank Zappa<\/a> is Car Bomb, a resolutely hard-hitting New York quartet with enormous energy.<\/p>\n<p>Having arrived with a bang in 2007, the band\u2019s debut album, <em>Centralia<\/em>, was released via Relapse Records. Subsequent albums have been independently released through Bandcamp, including their most recent, <em>Tiles Whisper Dreams.<\/em><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-base\" \/>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;d be nice to have an army of people working your music, but the cost of that privilege is far greater than the benefit,\u201d says bassist Jon Modell. \u201cGone are the days of trying to break a record through terrestrial radio. I\u2019m looking to provide that foundation with the drums, and to keep things as tight as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also take on the roles of business manager, tour manager, bookkeeper, purchasing agent, and merch shop guy. I\u2019d been playing piano up until then, and was getting into heavier music. I wanted to be in a band and there were no bass players around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who were your early bass influences?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Paul Jones, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/geezer-butler\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/geezer-butler\">Geezer Butler<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/cliff-burton\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/cliff-burton\">Cliff Burton<\/a>, and then someone turned me on to Stanley Clarke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you the same bass player you were on the early Car Bomb records?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose early recordings and performances represent me moving from one kind of bass player to another. I played a six-string bass with my fingers, but Car Bomb opened me up to playing with a pick, and seeing if my right hand could cooperate with the demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was still a rawer element to <em>Demo \u2013 Three Song Sampler<\/em> and <em>Centralia<\/em>. You can kind of hear us evolving on the <em>w^w^^w^w<\/em> record, heading to where we ended up on <em>Meta<\/em>. That album definitely changed our trajectory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s it like playing with Greg Kubacki?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreg is such an interesting guitar player, and his use of effects has forced me to learn how to bend notes in really interesting ways. I play through an SVT 810, so between the rack and the cabinet, I was lugging well over 200lbs to every gig! I still have most of that gear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kind of bass are you playing these days?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been playing a Dingwall NG2 since 2015. When we were preparing to record <em>Meta<\/em>, I was looking for something that could cut through Greg\u2019s massive tone, and I saw Nolly\u2019s <em>Make Total Destroy<\/em> video, and that was it. I went on a tear to find one as they were not nearly as available as they are today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve since picked up another NG2 with the old soapbar pickups. I also have some NG3s now, but that first NG2 is the bass I used to record <em>Meta<\/em>, <em>Mordial<\/em>, and the new <em>Tiles Whisper Dreams <\/em>EP. Greg tracks drums with Elliot at Joe Duplantier\u2019s Silver Cord studio, and the rest of us all record at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreg is the main songwriter for the band and many of the songs are still being written while we\u2019re recording them. We also never know what the vocals are going to be until they&#8217;re mostly done. So, the whole thing is a little ass-backwards, but I\u2019d say it\u2019s equal parts frustrating and rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you enjoy recording?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do, but if you were standing next to me while I was doing it, you wouldn\u2019t think so! I scream at myself a lot, but this isn\u2019t the kind of music you just sit down and nail the first time you play it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s the biggest challenge?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always worried that I won\u2019t be able to play the material. There\u2019s a lot of really intricate stuff and I\u2019m never sure that I\u2019m capable of pulling it off. Now I\u2019ve been a pick guy for so long I\u2019m afraid to play fingerstyle!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you the type of player who spends days going for that perfect take?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spend a lot of time trying to get it perfect. I might struggle, but something in me believes that I can do it. That belief really drives me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNailing a part that you\u2019ve been struggling with is such an incredible feeling. I\u2019ll listen back to the take and gleefully bask in that feeling of satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The track <\/strong><em><strong>Blindsides<\/strong><\/em><strong> sounds ferocious. How would you typically develop a bass part like that? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about what the song calls for. Greg always provides a great outline, and he has such vision for the journey of the song.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our songs require the signature Car Bomb jackhammers, and big sweeping bends. <em>Blindsides<\/em> breathes and offers up some big open parts for me to noodle around. I always have <em>Sleep Is Wrong <\/em>in my head. Although I don\u2019t think it would necessarily work for Car Bomb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI strive for a bass sound that has thick low-end, but I still want people to hear the articulation of what I\u2019m playing. I pick the strings pretty aggressively, and that gnarly sound is what I want people to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you a bass player who spends hours practicing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy life is jam-packed, but I\u2019m always trying to find the time. I certainly allocate more time to practicing if we\u2019re getting ready to record or to go on tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like exercising or eating right. Gojira still holds such a special place in my heart as Joe and I have been friends for the better part of two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it quite interesting that we can tour with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/animals-as-leaders\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/animals-as-leaders\">Animals As Leaders<\/a>, Periphery, and Between the Buried and Me, and get love. We can also tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah and get love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also had some less-than-ideal tours in the early years.
