Would you be interested and available?\u2019\u201d Why David Gilmour&#8217;s go-to bassist for the past four decades very nearly didn&#8217;t get the gig"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Guy Pratt has had an over-four-decade career holding down the low-end for an awe-inspiring list of names, including Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/gary-moore\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/gary-moore\">Gary Moore<\/a>, Michael Jackson, Debbie Harry&#8230; and the list goes on \u2013 not to mention his side hustle as a TV, film, and theater composer.<\/p>\n<p>However, the bassist&#8217;s career over the past 38 years has largely been taken up by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/david-gilmour\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/david-gilmour\">David Gilmour<\/a>, who handpicked him as his go-to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-bass-guitars-for-every-budget\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-bass-guitars-for-every-budget\">bass <\/a>player. Yet, this solid working relationship very nearly didn&#8217;t happen.<\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-base\" \/>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing was, I was playing for Dream Academy, and David had produced them. He needed a support band for this one show in Birmingham,\u201d he recounts in a new interview with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.premierguitar.com\/features\/artist-features\/bassist-guy-pratts-career-in-rock\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.premierguitar.com\/features\/artist-features\/bassist-guy-pratts-career-in-rock\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"><em>Premier Guitar<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-3 pb-4 mb-4 border-solid border-y border-neutral-300\"><span class=\"font-article-heading block pb-3 !text-base font-bold uppercase sm:text-sm text-[#333]\">You may like<\/span><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe [Nick Laird-Clowes from Dream Academy] said, \u2018David\u2019s heard your playing. He thinks you\u2019re amazing. He can\u2019t wait to meet you\u2019 \u2013 which of course was just bollocks. So we get up there in Birmingham. I\u2019m terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the meeting didn&#8217;t turn out as planned\u2026 \u201cI went in and just stood in his dressing room, and it was awful. We both stood there with nothing to say until one of us had to walk away. David, being the ranking officer, got to be the one who walked away. And that was the end of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the awkward first meeting didn&#8217;t sour the budding relationship, as Gilmour was still adamant about recruiting Pratt as his bassist. \u201cI went on holiday to Thailand and I came back, and there\u2019s all these messages from David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continues, \u201cThe first one saying hi, he was doing an Amnesty International concert, the Secret Policeman\u2019s Ball, and he wanted me to play with him and Kate Bush. And there\u2019s another message and another message. \u2018Hi Guy, just wondered, it\u2019s next week you know.\u2019 And then, of course, he had to get someone else. We\u2019re putting Pink Floyd back together.\u2019 He said, the tour was gonna be a year, and would I be interested and available? So I went, \u2018Yes!\u2019 And he said, \u2018Oh, not working much, then?\u2019 And that started our relationship of him ribbing me and me constantly falling for it. That\u2019s been the hallmark of our relationship for the last 38 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for how he typically works with Gilmour, Pratt notes that what he always finds interesting when rehearsing with him is \u201cwhat he [Gilmour] remembers from bass parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He clarifies, \u201cA lot of the music is so slow and so big and there\u2019s so much space in it. Very often, it\u2019s actually the length of the notes rather than how many notes you\u2019re playing that matters more.
