With <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/mark-knopfler\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/mark-knopfler\">Mark Knopfler<\/a>, you can tell, it\u2019s absolutely genuine.<\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-base\" \/>\n<p>Over the course of our interview at the British Grove facility he founded two decades ago, the 75-year-old former leader of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/dire-straits\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/dire-straits\">Dire Straits<\/a> will tell us, with unblinking sincerity, that he considers himself a mediocre player who struggled among more capable studio musicians and squirmed every time he was anointed as a guitar hero.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-3 pb-4 mb-4 border-solid border-y border-neutral-300\"><span class=\"font-article-heading block pb-3 !text-base font-bold uppercase sm:text-sm text-[#333]\">You may like<\/span><\/aside>\n<p>We must respectfully disagree with our host, of course. Anyone who followed his band from the South London ratholes of the late \u201970s to the stadiums of the mid-\u201980s would agree that Knopfler is a contender for the most beautiful, lyrical, shiver-and-tingle guitarist that Britain ever produced, the sound of his bare fingers dancing on the neck of his preferred \u201961 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-stratocasters-top-fender-stratocasters-for-every-budget\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-stratocasters-top-fender-stratocasters-for-every-budget\">Strat<\/a> one of the era\u2019s most magical sounds.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence for his brilliance is writ large across a five-decade catalog, from the bob-and-weave outro of 1978&#8217;s <em>Sultans of Swing<\/em> to the metallic resonator pluck of 1980&#8217;s <em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em> and all over a 10-album-strong solo career that makes his peers look sluggish with its breadth and quality.<\/p>\n<p>But if a Knopfler fan were to pick his or her desert island album, it would surely be 1985\u2019s <em>Brothers in Arms<\/em>. Flowing from the Synclavier quack of <em>So Far Away<\/em> to the stormy title track\u2019s molten solo \u2013 via the zydeco tootle of <em>Walk of Life<\/em> and the hairy-backed riff of <em>Money for Nothing<\/em> \u2013 this is Knopfler\u2019s masterpiece. How does it feel to revisit a piece of music you recorded 40 years ago? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, it\u2019s tempting just to say, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s nothing\u2019 and downplay it, but thinking about <em>Brothers in Arms<\/em> now, it seems like that record meant so much to so many people. I mean, that\u2019s why we\u2019re sitting here now. I think it was a combination of luck and events crashing into each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were so lucky to have intersected with Neil Dorfsman, who was such a great engineer. The record came out and we had a bunch of hits in America \u2013 that makes a hell of a difference. The CD had just been invented and they decided it would be a super idea to push <em>Brothers in Arms<\/em> in hi-fi shops. That\u2019s where a lot of people first heard it. Then the singles made it in different countries and it became a worldwide thing. Because we were touring so much. I would have been writing a lot on the road, in hotel rooms. And you got used to doing that. If you saw me walking up a hotel corridor holding a chair that had no arms, that was so I could play guitar on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you remember about writing the key tracks?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Walk of Life<\/em> came from a big spell of listening to Cajun music \u2013 that\u2019s the accordion lick, played on a keyboard by Guy Fletcher \u2013 combined with a rockabilly guitar rhythm. That would have been played on my red \u201983 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/schecter-guitars\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/schecter-guitars\">Schecter<\/a> <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-telecasters-fender-guitars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-telecasters-fender-guitars\">Telecaster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Money for Nothing<\/em> was my \u201983 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/les-paul\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/les-paul\">Les Paul<\/a>, and it comes from that clawhammer style. It\u2019s just picking that pattern, and you mask off a lot of the notes, try to play the right ones. With that song, I was listening to a lot of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/zz-top\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/zz-top\">ZZ Top<\/a>, things like <em>Gimme All Your Lovin\u2019<\/em>. Boogie is a big part of where I\u2019m from. You know, it almost comes from a fingerstyle perspective, just cranked up a little bit and smokin\u2019 along. Boogie doesn\u2019t really have an overplayed vibe, it just rocks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very interesting to me, the furniture of the title track on <em>Brothers in Arms<\/em>. If you think about the first four notes I play on guitar \u2013 I\u2019ve tried doing other intros live, and they just don\u2019t work. People have bought tickets and you can see them thinking, \u2018That\u2019s not <em>Brothers in Arms<\/em>.\u2019 That\u2019s not to say you have to play the guitar part the same way every time. Once I\u2019ve played those four notes, then I can start to improvise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the early days, you were known for single-coil sounds, but your 1983 <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-gibson-les-pauls-for-every-budget\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-gibson-les-pauls-for-every-budget\"><strong>Gibson Les Paul<\/strong><\/a><strong> \u201959 reissue played such a major role on <\/strong><em><strong>Brothers in Arms<\/strong><\/em><strong>. Did you always covet a Gibson?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>Why did I choose to play the title track on the \u201983 Les Paul? Maybe it was from listening to Need Your Love So Bad by Peter Green<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s putting it mildly! That moment of looking through the windows in Denmark Street \u2013 there was all of that. Every clich\u00e9. Why did I choose to play the title track on the \u201983 Les Paul? Maybe it was from listening to <em>Need Your Love So Bad<\/em> by Peter Green [with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/fleetwood-mac\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/fleetwood-mac\">Fleetwood Mac<\/a>]. He was a beautiful guitar player. What a shame that he deteriorated. And that wasn\u2019t a distorted guitar sound, but it was so powerful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy gear got more expensive as Dire Straits got bigger, but it still took a long time before I could get to a \u201958 Les Paul. That was a bit later on, when I realized just how good they were. When Gibson made a bunch of repro \u201958s, they took my \u201958 and did a great job recreating it. They made about 55, and they\u2019re fabulous. I know there was my roadie Ronnie Eve\u2019s Marshall JTM45 that I\u2019ve still got [<em>Eve confirmed via email that the head was run into a Laney 4&#215;12 belonging to AIR Studios in Monserrat<\/em>]. My 1937 National resonator from the Brothers in Arms record sleeve \u2013 that would be on <em>The Man\u2019s Too Strong<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDebbie Feingold, she was the photographer for that sleeve, and she\u2019d marked that shot with lipstick saying, \u2018I love this.\u2019 And I remember saying, \u2018I love it too.\u2019 How could you not? It was such a great shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat National looked like a spaceship, up against the sky like that. And that was Montserrat light, too. The world is bursting with fabulous players. Whether I\u2019ve written a good song or not, that\u2019s what counts to me. I gave up trying to be a great guitar player. I have enough to get by in the studio \u2013 that\u2019s how I see myself as a guitar player. Not much more than that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I can get away with it. If you\u2019re the one who wrote the songs, you\u2019re kind of allowed to be crap. Well, not to be crap, but you\u2019re given some leeway because you wrote the thing. The other guys are there, really standing by their instruments: \u2018I play piano,\u2019 \u2018I play bass.\u2019 Like, \u2018I\u2019m good at this and that\u2019s why I\u2019m here\u2019 \u2013 and boy, they are. I got away with murder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the guys that really know their business \u2013 the session guys, making a living with their instruments \u2013 that\u2019s a whole other kettle of fish. I remember, in the solo band one day, I said, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m sorry about the [mistake] in so and so\u2019. I was still learning how to play in time, after years of working in studios with engineers who would say, \u2018You\u2019re rushing there.\u2019 And you\u2019d say, \u2018No I\u2019m not.\u2019 And they\u2019d say, \u2018Yes, you are.\u2019 Because you didn\u2019t recognize it. You didn\u2019t know it yet. You think you\u2019re playing in time \u2013 but you\u2019re not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to learn that. It takes a long time, especially if you\u2019re playing 8th and 16th notes with your thumb and fingers. That\u2019s just part of the journey. Some of the very finest musicians have told me they had to learn the same thing. Glenn Worf [bassist] was just the same. You seem to really let each note breathe. Do you think your philosophy to lead work was changing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt probably was. You start to realize how much real estate there is in a bar \u2013 where you can put the notes or, if you have a band of that quality, where you can lean on the timing a little bit. But there wasn\u2019t really time to think about it. You\u2019re just moving on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe band had developed. It was a lot louder and more powerful, with keyboards becoming more important. That then makes you think in a different way \u2013 more inversions, perhaps. But I didn\u2019t force it. I didn\u2019t stop picking on country tunes. Because we were both pickers in that sense \u2013 but, of course, Chet was otherworldly. I used to go round to his office and hang out, and I\u2019ll never forget, we once played and sang the song <em>Kentucky<\/em> all morning.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>Chet had such facility and knowledge, and yet what he wanted to do was play Kentucky \u2013 which has two chords \u2013 all morning long<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChet had such facility and knowledge, and yet what he wanted to do was play <em>Kentucky<\/em> \u2013 which has two chords \u2013 all morning long. He\u2019d say to me, \u2018You\u2019re pretty good, but you\u2019re no Mark Knopfler.\u2019 He always had good jokes. You know, you\u2019d get to the end of something and he\u2019d go, \u2018Very educational.\u2019 And then he\u2019d say, \u2018A little below above average.\u2019 Or something like that. Very dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only remember him being slightly put\u2011out once, when John Fahey said he\u2019d been double-tracking. Chet was not pleased by that. And he wrote to whatever magazine it was and said, \u2018You can learn to do this with your own two hands; you don\u2019t need double\u2011tracking.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, Chet liked multi-tracking too, of course, but only if he was doing something even more complicated. But he could play <em>Yankee Doodle <\/em>and <em>Battle Hymn of the Republic<\/em> at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you remember about the hysteria that set in after <\/strong><em><strong>Brothers in Arms<\/strong><\/em><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember doing the Mandela show [Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, June 1988]. We were walking up to the stage \u2013 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/eric-clapton\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/eric-clapton\">Eric Clapton<\/a> was playing with us that night \u2013 and somebody said, \u2018Oh, there\u2019s 650 million people watching.\u2019 And I thought, \u2018Oh, what have I done?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard our sound man\u2019s voice from the desk and he\u2019s going, \u2018I can\u2019t hear a fucking thing!\u2019 I thought, \u2018Oh shit, there\u2019s been a breakdown, he\u2019s lost his sound.\u2019 But what he was talking about was the noise in the stadium before we went on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Much of the <\/strong><em><strong>Brothers in Arms<\/strong><\/em><strong> gear was sold in the charity guitar auction you held in 2024. Did it hurt to see it go?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, of course, when you\u2019re saying goodbye to that \u201983 Les Paul and that Schecter Tele. But it\u2019s fine. You\u2019re not going to sit and play all those guitars. It\u2019s time to thin it out a bit. Give them another home. We\u2019d become pals and Tony had switched to a Strat, and I was \u2019round at his house playing one day. I\u2019d given him an acoustic guitar as a present. And he reached under the sofa and he pulled out this dusty old case. And he says, \u2018Mark, I want you to have this guitar. I don\u2019t play it anymore.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI opened up the case and the fingerboard is so sweat-pitted it\u2019s got shell shapes between all the frets. And I said, \u2018I can\u2019t take this, Tony.\u2019 And he said, \u2018Hell, take it; I don\u2019t want the damn thing.\u2019 So I put a new fingerboard on it and I\u2019m never without that on a recording session.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I was recording now, that 330 would be here. I love that guitar. But I\u2019m hoping to put my head down and really get back into some proper playing in the near future. Covid slowed me down a lot. I\u2019ve had it three times. And then, if you\u2019re away from the guitar for a while, your pads get softer and you lose your facility a little bit. So I\u2019m really looking forward to improving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what happens is, you develop lazy techniques. I\u2019m forever doing that. You know, half-chords, these little semi-shapes. It wouldn\u2019t make a teacher very happy. I mean, nothing I do would make a guitar teacher happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you think guitarists can keep improving all the way through their lives?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know about \u2018improve.\u2019 I think you just find new things to inspire you. Because there\u2019s just no end to it. It\u2019s really all there for you, if you just want to sit down and be bothered to learn it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you were to look in a guitar shop window today, would you be as excited as when you were a young man?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely. I\u2019ll still walk across the road to look at motorbikes. And it\u2019s the same with guitars. What\u2019s wrong with me? I\u2019m stuck in my childhood. But I think you need to have that semi-obsessional point of view. It doesn\u2019t matter what it is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, how could you succeed in football if you didn\u2019t love the game, even if you were earning a quarter-of-a-million pounds a week? If you didn\u2019t love the game, it would show. It has to border on obsession. And I think people like to be around that. Just to see these maniacs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally, do you think <\/strong><em><strong>Brothers in Arms<\/strong><\/em><strong> is Dire Straits\u2019 best record?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never think in terms of \u2018best.\u2019 You absolutely can\u2019t.
