I was shocked\u201d: Jake Kiszka on Mirador, his hard-riffing collab with blues brother Chris Turpin \u2013 and what it means for Greta Van Fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>This business of naming a band can be a tricky thing \u2013 and a little silly sometimes. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/greta-van-fleet\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/greta-van-fleet\">Greta Van Fleet<\/a> guitarist Jake Kiszka and Ida Mae guitarist Chris Turpin racked their brains trying to come up with the perfect moniker for the new group they had just formed.<\/p>\n<p>Ideas were batted back and forth\u2026 but nothing clicked. Finally, in a dramatic bolt of inspiration, Kiszka seized on a word: Marauder. He excitedly texted Turpin, who enthusiastically agreed that the name felt right. But there was just one problem: Kiszka had misspelled the word as \u201cMirador.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-base\" \/>\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018mirador\u2019? No, no, I wrote \u2018marauder,\u2019\u201d Kiszka says with a laugh. \u201cThen we looked it up, and it said that a mirador is basically a vista or a viewpoint suspended on a high place, typically overlooking a body of water. That seemed to fit, and it felt symbolic being that Chris is British and he was always looking to the West for influences, whereas I looked East and got my influences from Europe. So that\u2019s how we became Mirador.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-3 pb-4 mb-4 border-solid border-y border-neutral-300\"><span class=\"font-article-heading block pb-3 !text-base font-bold uppercase sm:text-sm text-[#333]\">You may like<\/span><\/aside>\n<p>Kiszka and Turpin met back in 2018 when Ida Mae opened for Greta Van Fleet during a run of dates at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, about an hour and a half south of Greta Van Fleet\u2019s old Frankenmuth, Michigan, stomping ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very attracted to how they had this <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/blues\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/blues\">blues<\/a> element that they mixed with worldly music and this sort of ancient folk approach,\u201d Kiszka says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember watching their soundcheck before I had met them. They were these interesting, drab-looking British folks with blond hair. Chris had long hair and a goatee, and he played <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-resonator-guitars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-resonator-guitars\">resonator guitar<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-guitar-slide\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-guitar-slide\">slide<\/a>. I thought it was really cool, and I connected with what he was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, the admiration was mutual. The two guitarists became fast friends, and their relationship blossomed a year later when Ida Mae served as Greta\u2019s opening act for arena shows in the States. Because we\u2019re a band of brothers [the group also includes singer Josh Kiszka and bassist Sam Kiszka, along with drummer Danny Wagner], there was always that kind of thing when we were kids, where I\u2019d go off with a new friend from school. But in the end, the brothers would always get back together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once Kiszka and Turpin decided to formalize their partnership and take things a step further by forming an actual band, they rounded out the lineup by bringing in London hotshots Mikey Sorbello (drums) and Nick Pini (bass, keyboards).<\/p>\n<p>Greta Van Fleet\u2019s 2023 <em>Starcatcher<\/em> world tour was already on the books; the year-old excursion might cause Mirador to lose some steam, but Kiszka had an ace up his sleeve: his new band would simply open shows for Greta throughout the U.S. run. It was a little crazy, doing this 40- or 45-minute set with Mirador. Then I\u2019d get off the stage, go get ready and go back out to do a two-hour headlining set with Greta Van Fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion of the U.S. tour, Kiszka felt as if he\u2019d pushed himself to the limit. \u201cIt was overwhelming,\u201d he says. \u201cI was experiencing emotional nuances to this dance that I had to try to overcome. I think what made it all possible for me was the band chemistry between everybody in Mirador, and that chemistry was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I didn\u2019t have the support from those guys, it would\u2019ve been very challenging for me to get through it. There was a brotherhood in Mirador that was forged in the fire of those shows.\u201d He pauses, then adds, \u201cAnd, of course, it\u2019s there with my brothers in Greta. But on Mirador\u2019s self-titled album, the group comes off like the real deal, and they serve up a full-bodied set bursting with nerviness and brio, along with a host of exquisitely crafted songs that arrive fresh and vital.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s always a pleasure to listen to marvelously gifted people doing what they do well, and here we have Kiszka and Turpin going toe-to-toe and blowing each other\u2019s minds. Turpin\u2019s voice is that of a bourbon-flavored chest-beater, while Kiszka\u2019s forceful tenor reveals piquant nuances. Together they\u2019re dynamite.<\/p>\n<p>As guitarists, they come loaded for bear. Riffs pile atop riffs, and tangled, snarling solos land punch after punch. On gutsy, cosmic blues rockers like <em>Roving Blade <\/em>and <em>Raider<\/em>, the two rip it up with wah-drenched leads and smarty-pants licks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-video youtube-facade\" data-nosnippet=\"\">\n<div class=\"video-aspect-box\">\n<div class=\"watch-on-iframe-E8u3OjvtP6M\" data-yt-video-token=\"E8u3OjvtP6M\" title=\"Mirador - Blood and Custard (NYC) - YouTube\"><span class=\"youtube-video-title\">Mirador &#8211; Blood and Custard (NYC) &#8211; YouTube<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/E8u3OjvtP6M\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"Mirador - Blood and Custard (NYC) - YouTube\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"watch-on-youtube-E8u3OjvtP6M\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/E8u3OjvtP6M\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/E8u3OjvtP6M\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">Watch On <\/a><\/div>\n<p>Things get chill and pastoral on <em>Dream Seller <\/em>and <em>Ten Thousand More to Ride<\/em>, but <em>Ashes to Earth <\/em>(a last-minute addition to the album) takes off in a heady gallop and just won\u2019t quit, with Kiszka\u2019s spitfire soloing accelerating the pace.<\/p>\n<p>Kiszka sounds like he\u2019s having the time of his life with Mirador, and he\u2019s psyched to hit the road with the new gang. But he stresses that, no matter how well Mirador is received, it won\u2019t spell the end of Greta.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>For the most part, though, it\u2019s the four of us looking out at this sort of cosmic space every night. There\u2019s this sort of black void, and the people just go off into the distance<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working on a record right now, as it were,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I\u2019ve sort of gone into this very involved landscape of working between two different groups.\u201d Asked if the other members of Greta are entertaining their own side projects, he smiles and says, \u201cYes. You\u2019ll see it\u2019s all sort of up in the air\u2026 but you\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>When Greta Van Fleet were starting out, you fine-tuned your songs in clubs. For a long while, you were under the radar while you got your act together. Was it a little strange to road test Mirador\u2019s songs in front of 20,000 people a night?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so. I honestly didn\u2019t really know quite what to expect. I didn\u2019t know how many people were going to show up. We went out with this new material, but in a way there was nothing foundational for them to react to. I thought maybe we\u2019d have about 2,000 people show up early, maybe a bit, but almost every single night of that tour, the arena was packed full. Our first performance was for something like 10,000 people. It was really remarkable, the response to it. I was shocked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greta is now a big-time arena band. Has success changed the way you guys operate, business-wise or creatively?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>Another aspect of Mirador that I was anticipating was that we\u2019d have this intimacy with people again, and we could connect with them more directly through the music<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI would say in some aspects, in that the business landscape surrounding the musical industry has evolved. There\u2019s a lot more people involved with us now than there once were. It\u2019s getting to that point where you don&#8217;t necessarily know everybody by name, whereas before we were going into a club or a theater and we saw people\u2019s faces and connected with them in a more intimate setting. I suppose now you can do that to a certain degree with the people down in the pit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the most part, though, it\u2019s the four of us looking out at this sort of cosmic space every night. There\u2019s this sort of black void, and the people just go off into the distance. I guess some of the nuance of that connection or that intimacy gets lost because of the sheer scale of these venues. I imagine it\u2019s different with Mirador because you\u2019re something of a veteran musician. You know what works and what doesn\u2019t.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was another interesting aspect to Mirador. There were a lot of things I wish I had done with Greta that if I could go back in time and do differently, I would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Such as?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch as the way things were recorded. I love the way that there\u2019s an evolution to what Greta has done, and there\u2019s a stark difference between every record we&#8217;ve created, which I think is quite cool and unique.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Mirador, I think it\u2019s going to be different because there are musicians who weren&#8217;t playing in a garage growing up together. They\u2019re sort of seasoned veterans of their own kind, established musicians and artists, if you will, from different parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMikey and Nick are very serious session players and have played throughout the underground London circuit scene. I know Nick has done a lot with Adele. But even so, they\u2019re kind of under the radar. And, of course, there\u2019s Chris and his approach to guitar playing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting all of these people together, it wasn\u2019t going to be like, \u2018Let\u2019s figure out who we are and what we stand for.\u2019 It was more like, \u2018We\u2019re a bunch of men who know.\u2019 We got together and it was just like bash! The simple fact is, there\u2019s a segment of people who are going to be interested in what you\u2019re doing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the same time, some Greta loyalists might be disgruntled. Fans can be a little territorial.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course. Not that I\u2019ve noticed that particularly, but I\u2019m sure there\u2019s a faction of people who understandably do share that philosophy \u2013 \u2018I want to see this thing I\u2019m familiar with. I know it speaks to me, it touches me.\u2019 I think you\u2019re right. I think you nailed it with that. At the same time, there are commonalities between Greta and Mirador \u2013 we both share blues as a foundation. With Chris and me, maybe being more guitar and vocal-oriented individuals, we were drawn to it. As kids, we were raised on it.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>The two of us grew up playing guitar, and we learned blues music by the original guitar heroes<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cChris\u2019 fascination varies from mine as he\u2019s from England, and he was getting all the imported stuff from all the old record labels, the Chicago and Delta blues. I kind of grew up in Detroit where there was a lot of that Motown, but I also had this immediate influence from all the blues records I had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two of us grew up playing guitar, and we learned blues music by the original guitar heroes. That was a huge connection between us. We talked about Junior Kimbrough, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/muddy-waters\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/muddy-waters\">Muddy Waters<\/a>, Howlin&#8217; Wolf and Lightnin\u2019 Hopkins\u2026 Elmore James and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/albert-king\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/albert-king\">Albert King<\/a>, Freddie King and all the Kings\u2026 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/buddy-guy\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/buddy-guy\">Buddy Guy<\/a>. All this blues stuff was mecca for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris gets really into the blues, and he\u2019s sort of a historian. I found that fascinating. We traded lots of guitar licks. I mean, I was finding a lost brother who had all the guitar licks that I didn\u2019t. But now you have somebody to work off of; you didn\u2019t have to create that sound yourself. Was there a bit more freedom there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I would say so. I mean, that\u2019s an interesting question because you can sort of hear the guitar playing and be like, \u2018Oh, that does sound like something Jake would do.\u2019 But there\u2019s also these elements of, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s something Chris would do.\u2019 It seemingly comes together as a uniform thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as much as I was able to remove myself from just solely focusing on the guitar playing, I was now starting to focus on the vocal aspect of the record. There would be times when I\u2019d go, \u2018This guitar part is kind of done and I&#8217;m happy with that. I\u2019m going to leave this be and Chris can smooth it over.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a completely different approach for me, and one that I was very unfamiliar with, approaching vocals and guitars. In some ways I found the solution on the record was to do less with the guitar. I would be like, \u2018What do I do here?\u2019 Actually, in most cases, the answer was to do nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I imagine you already encountered that on stage, where you were trying to focus on singing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTotally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>You were like, \u201cI can&#8217;t do this complicated lick here while I&#8217;m trying to put a song across.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, totally \u2013 which is frustrating. But yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a difference between how you write with Chris versus how you write songs with the guys in Greta?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so, because typically with Greta, there\u2019s four guys and they\u2019re all main contributors. Something comes in on different instruments all the time, and sometimes it\u2019s just vocal. Sometimes it\u2019s on piano, sometimes it\u2019s guitar. Sometimes it\u2019s just a song idea based on an orchestral piece of music or some world music. There\u2019s so many different angles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Mirador, it\u2019s fascinating because it\u2019s just me and Chris as two partners locking in together. It\u2019s a fusion of how much can we do with two vocals that haven\u2019t been done before, and specifically in the realm of rock \u2019n\u2019 roll as this genre specifically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as it applies to everything else, it\u2019s like, \u2018How can we approach two vocals in a way that hasn\u2019t been done, and how can we approach two guitars at the same time in a way that hasn\u2019t been done?\u2019 We thought it was interesting territory to be in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the writing chemistry became, \u2018Where do we put these harmonies? How are they going to be?\u2019 And then creating actual <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/greatest-guitar-riffs-of-all-time\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/greatest-guitar-riffs-of-all-time\">guitar riffs<\/a> where two guitars come together to effectively achieve one thing that could be played on a single guitar by one person if that\u2019s what we wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re working again with Dave Cobb, who produced Greta Van Fleet\u2019s 2023 album, <\/strong><em><strong>Starcatcher<\/strong><\/em><strong>. Did you at first think, \u201cNew band, so we need a new producer\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were a few names in the hat, [producer\/engineer] Ethan Johns being one of them because Chris is quite close with him. There were a few other ideas. I\u2019ve done a lot of production work with Greta that\u2019s coming up, and Chris has done a lot of production work as well, so we were thinking that maybe we could self-produce the record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut pretty soon the material became a main influence in deciding how we were going to go about producing it, and Dave was immediate to me. He was the right choice for the record we were trying to make, with us co-producing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a really specific idea of what I wanted it to sound like, and Chris allowed me to take the reins. He wanted me to get across what I was hearing and feeling. So I called Dave and asked him if he\u2019d be interested in co-producing this new project, and he was into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let me ask you about a few songs. <\/strong><em><strong>Roving Blade<\/strong><\/em><strong> has an absolute whopper of an end solo. What was going on there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a guitar perspective, I think I was using my beloved \u2018number one\u2019 \u2013 the \u201961 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-gibson-les-pauls-for-every-budget\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-gibson-les-pauls-for-every-budget\">Les Paul<\/a>. That solo was interesting in that I had a basic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gear\/best-pedalboards\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gear\/best-pedalboards\">pedalboard<\/a> while we were tracking; I had a \u201960s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/jimi-hendrix\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/jimi-hendrix\">Hendrix<\/a> Vox wah, and I was going through an old Princeton amp. But I played the solo as something of a placeholder. I was improvising and working my way through it with the idea that I would perfect it later. Then we got to overdub world and Dave said, \u2018That solo, just leave it. It\u2019s perfect.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>That happens time and time again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does. It was like I was \u2018one-take Jake,\u2019 as they call me. It was a good solo, but I was a little skeptical. I thought I could beat it, but Dave and Chris were very adamant that it remained that way, which is fine. I\u2019ll admit, there is this kind of imperfection in the solo, but I think it\u2019s full of attitude and it just leaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s what counts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight. I think there might have also been a stereo slap pedal on that as well, but we definitely pushed the volume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Blood and Custard<\/strong><\/em><strong> has an epic riff. Those kinds of riffs don\u2019t come along every day, do they?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, they don\u2019t. I think that song is a perfect example of what type of things don&#8217;t necessarily translate in the world of Greta. That was a riff I had for a long, long time. It\u2019s just been sitting on the shelf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say I was influenced by the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/eric-clapton\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/eric-clapton\">Eric Clapton<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/duane-allman\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/duane-allman\">Duane Allman<\/a> song <em>Mean Old World<\/em>, that kind of acoustic interpretation of a traditional blues song. So I had this thing hanging on the wall, and I wanted something with slide guitar on the record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, Chris is a great and very unique slide player, and I\u2019m also known to play some slide, which I love doing. I put that riff to Chris and he loved it. He suggested <em>Blood and Custard<\/em>, which was an old nickname for the original Vox [AC] amplifiers \u2013 they had this <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/cream\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/cream\">cream<\/a>-and-red binding. That\u2019s a good [example of] guitar nerdism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greta didn\u2019t want that riff?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s wrong with those guys?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Laughs] Yeah, exactly! That\u2019s what I\u2019m saying. I think Josh is very critical of guitar things, and it wasn\u2019t something that he was particularly interested in. I don\u2019t think it ever made it to the final stages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wow. All right then. <\/strong><em><strong>Ashes to Earth <\/strong><\/em><strong>is one of the most exciting tracks on the record. It grabs you right away and gets the job done.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, thank you. That song originally started out completely different. If you can imagine it, it was a ballad at first. Dave listened to it and said, \u2018We need something that\u2019s more aggressive. I think we can enhance the danger level on this one.\u2019 He went home and then Chris and I put together what you hear now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDave came back the next day and loved it. Again, I think this is one of those things where that delineation between Greta and Mirador becomes more present. It\u2019s a pretty heavy song. I think it\u2019s slightly more aggressive than anything Greta has done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there guitar or sonic elements you employed in Mirador again that you just haven\u2019t been able to get across in Greta?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019ve been quite clever in how I incorporate most of the guitar-type stuff that I want into Greta. Again, the only person who really meets me with disinterest or pushback is Josh, really. That\u2019s understandable, because the vocals and the guitars are very succinct in their frequencies, but they\u2019re also melody instruments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJosh is singing lots of melodies, and I\u2019m a very melodic guitar player, so those two things do have a tendency to clash. I\u2019ve wanted to play more <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-12-string-guitars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-12-string-guitars\">12-string guitar<\/a>, and I was able to do a lot of that on the Mirador record. The slide playing was also a huge aspect, because again, slide and some of the vocal things weren\u2019t working together in Greta, but here they did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should point out that the sheer volume of the guitars on this record is another difference. Dave Cobb was like, \u2018Look, this is a guitar record by two guitar players. I think the guitars I play on records seem to be the ones that are close by and accessible. Obviously, I use my \u201961 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/les-paul\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/les-paul\">Les Paul<\/a> a lot \u2013 I\u2019ve always been steadfast about that one. There were two acoustics that I used \u2013 one was Dave\u2019s old pre\u2011war Martin, the 00-18.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>Dave has this early \u201950s Telecaster. It was his first guitar, and he just loves it&#8230; It was one the best-sounding Telecasters I\u2019ve ever played<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat was a huge one. I was pretty glued to that guitar, and I write almost exclusively on it. There was a Gibson 12-string electric \u2013 it was an ES-335 with this brown sparkle. It\u2019s pretty unique. That guitar was a gift from Daniel, the drummer in Greta. I used that one on the record; it\u2019s on <em>Fortune\u2019s Fate<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDave has this early \u201950s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-telecasters-fender-guitars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-telecasters-fender-guitars\">Telecaster<\/a>. It was his first guitar, and he just loves it \u2013 it\u2019s the guitar. I have to agree with him. It was one the best-sounding Telecasters I\u2019ve ever played. I used it on a track called <em>Heels of the Hunt<\/em>. Dave was like, \u2018We\u2019re done with the record, but let\u2019s do one last track. You and Chris go out on the dock, write a song, come back and we\u2019ll record it in 24 hours.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sure. No pressure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Laughs] No pressure, yeah. We were in Savannah, Georgia, out on the water. So Chris and I were like, \u2018OK, this is a test.&#8217; I think the objective was to get the ideal dream <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/18-ways-to-improve-your-guitar-tone\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/18-ways-to-improve-your-guitar-tone\">guitar tone<\/a>, and for me it was an old Selmer combo amplifier and Dave\u2019s Telecaster. It was just the most incredible guitar tone I&#8217;ve been able to get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What other <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-guitar-amps\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-guitar-amps\"><strong>guitar amps<\/strong><\/a><strong> did you use?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used a few <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-combo-amps\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-combo-amps\">combo amps<\/a> and a lot of Fenders. There was that Princeton amp I mentioned, along with some Fender Pro Reverbs and a few new Fender Champ combos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Okay, so realistically, how much extracurricular time are you going to be able to devote to Mirador before you have to go back to Greta World?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be interesting. There will be a balancing walk between giving as much as I can to one thing before I can go back into the other thing. I\u2019m in a position where I\u2019m sort of walking away from Greta and into Mirador, and I\u2019ve basically been given a year to do as much as I can before I go back and transition to the other world, with potentially a new Greta record at some point soon. I think my world will be like that for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m just thinking about what you told me about the <\/strong><em><strong>Blood and Custard<\/strong><\/em><strong> riff. Let&#8217;s say you came up with another awesome riff tonight. Will you be thinking, \u201cShit, which band do I give it to?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Laughs] That\u2019s it! That&#8217;s the dance, that&#8217;s the balancing act. Even now, there&#8217;s things I\u2019ve put together that come about, and I try to discern whether it belongs to Greta or Mirador.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>I think if it comes down to it, I have to go to the Greta guys and say, &#8216;You have rights to this first&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNormally, I can pre-dictate that. There have been times when I\u2019ve brought a riff to Greta, and the guys go, \u2018That\u2019s not a Greta song, man. That\u2019s a Mirador song.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously, there\u2019s enough for interpretation, and I\u2019ve explained to the guys \u2013 \u2018Look, we can manipulate this, we can arrange it, and we can nuance it so that it fits Greta.\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018No, it belongs to Mirador.\u2019 Some songs are like that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I have a pretty good gauge on which is which, because the two groups are sort of separate enough and they both have their own sound. But I think if it comes down to it, I have to go to the Greta guys and say, \u2018You have rights to this first.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>But then you don\u2019t want to go to Chris and have him say, \u201cOh, is this the stuff that Greta turned down?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, exactly! [Laughs] Right. And it kind of goes both ways. With <em>Blood and Custard,<\/em> It was like, \u2018Wait\u2026 that was one of ours!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I see your problem. Sounds like you need to start a third band.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.
