But his upcoming solo album, <em>Environments, <\/em>finds him in a much more intimate, instinctual setting.<\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-base\" \/>\n<p>The tracks are all improvised; and some, like album opener <em>Aviary | Sunrise<\/em>, were achieved in one take. For Bhatia \u2013 as with his visual identity explorations with artist Michael Cina \u2013 there\u2019s a constant need to explore juxtaposition.<\/p>\n<aside data-component-name=\"Recirculation:ArticleRiver\" data-nosnippet=\"\" class=\"clear-both pt-3 pb-4 mb-4 border-solid border-y border-neutral-300\"><span class=\"font-article-heading block pb-3 !text-base font-bold uppercase sm:text-sm text-[#333]\">You may like<\/span><\/aside>\n<p>Or as he posits from his sunlit New York apartment: \u201cAn intimacy and then a complete unfamiliarity.\u201d From emulating the air of a woodwind instrument to switching up character profiles on his Eventide H90, his quest is to make the guitar sound less like a guitar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There have been times when you considered a future without the guitar. What shifted for you and led you to <\/strong><em><strong>Environments<\/strong><\/em><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made this EP called<em> Standards Volume I<\/em>. I was thinking, \u2018What if I could make a recording that took on the American Songbook, but use this process I&#8217;ve been cultivating in the studio?\u2019 What ended up happening was that I barely touched the guitar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been using this analogy \u2013 we were at opposite ends of the party; I was turning around to leave, and I looked back at it one more time. I was like, \u2018Hold on!&#8217; because I love the guitar. I wanted the music to feel like it\u2019s growing and coming to life right in front of you. My 10 years in the studio were to interrogate that assumption \u2013 how central is it that the music comes together in real time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The concept of studio-as-instrument comes up repeatedly in your work. Who are the pioneers for you in that field?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly Madlib and Flying Lotus, and then <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/jimi-hendrix\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/jimi-hendrix\">Jimi Hendrix<\/a>. Rahman revolutionised the sound of Bollywood music, juxtaposing modern production techniques with old-school instrumentation. In hip-hop, early Wu-Tang records sampled old Japanese film scores and Kung Fu stuff. The graininess of the sound felt like an important part of the identity and mystery of the music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re known for alternative experimental guitar work with Son Lux. <\/strong><em><strong>Tomorrows \u2013<\/strong><\/em><strong> the companion album to <\/strong><em><strong>Everything Everywhere All at Once \u2013<\/strong><\/em><strong> showcased a sound you dubbed \u201cghost guitar.\u201d What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always trying to figure out how to accomplish on the guitar the things I love about woodwinds and horns \u2013 the feeling of breath in the sound. When bassists play that super-sub <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-bass-guitars-for-every-budget\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-bass-guitars-for-every-budget\">bass<\/a> it&#8217;s like air moving. I\u2019m like, \u2018How do I make the guitar do something like that?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI discovered that if you pitch-shift the guitar up into a register several octaves higher, and you play that through a speaker, you feel the air moving. That\u2019s the Ghost Guitar. It can be a very spooky feeling, but a little silly, which was perfect for something like <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Around the same time you started working with Eventide to offer input on the H90 Harmoniser <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-multi-effects-pedals-for-guitarists\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-multi-effects-pedals-for-guitarists\"><strong>multi-effects pedal<\/strong><\/a><strong>. How did that come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI visited them in person pre-pandemic. I\u2019m in the middle of New Jersey at their factory; I go into this little windowless room and they\u2019ve got the H90, and they\u2019re like, \u2018What else do you want it to do?\u2019<\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>If you push a button and the sound pours out exactly like you imagined, run in the other direction<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Here are all these things I\u2019d love to get rid of so I can make this smaller \u2013 insert points, MIDI program change capability and set list mode, so I could completely replace a pedal board controller.\u2019 These are things that the H90 can do that a lot of people don\u2019t even realise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s say I want a sound with reverb, and I\u2019ve got a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/the-best-distortion-pedals\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/the-best-distortion-pedals\">distortion pedal<\/a> in one of the insert points, and I want the distortion to only be on the reverb signal. I want a dry guitar blended with distortion. You can do that with the H90.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rafiq Bhatia\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/dvh6UPM5biDJgBVTNGGVA9.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/dvh6UPM5biDJgBVTNGGVA9.jpg\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">(Image credit: Shamrockraver)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn a setting like Son Lux, where we make all these sounds that have nothing to do with the guitar, I have to be able to switch, sometimes instantaneously, between completely different characters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gear\/best-pedalboards\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gear\/best-pedalboards\"><strong>pedalboard<\/strong><\/a><strong> also includes a Klon KTR, a Strymon Iridium amp and guitar cab simulator, and a Z.Vex Fat <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gear\/best-fuzz-pedals\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/gear\/best-fuzz-pedals\"><strong>Fuzz<\/strong><\/a><strong> Factory with a \u2018SUBS\u2019 switch to activate low-end rumble. Why this pedal over a traditional octave?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s been on there longer than anything else \u2013 it\u2019s the one thing I cannot get rid of. I bought it at the very beginning of playing with Son Lux. There\u2019s a song from the first record called <em>Lost It To Trying<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to play that bassline and I was like, \u2018How do I make the guitar sound like a baritone sax?\u2019 The H90 can get the pitch down an octave. If you buy a thing, push a button and the sound just pours out of it exactly like you imagined, run in the other direction.<strong> <\/strong>The component sounds need to be simple enough that there\u2019s room for you, the player, to express your ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your guitar of choice is a custom Flipperkaster built by Dutch luthier Flip Scipio, who has built instruments for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/paul-mccartney\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/paul-mccartney\">Paul McCartney<\/a>, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/bob-dylan\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/tag\/bob-dylan\">Bob Dylan<\/a> and Paul Simon. What did you want from the build?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure>\n<blockquote class=\"vanilla-quoteblock\">\n<p>The Flip guitar disappears into me \u2013 I focus on making music and it does all the things<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve ever seen <em>Kill Bill<\/em>, Flip Skipio is like Hattori Hanz\u014d. When I got to New York I kept hearing this guy\u2019s name. I was at the studio in Iceland mixing the <em>Breaking English<\/em> record with Alex Somers and he had one of Shahzad [Ismaily]\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-baritone-guitars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-baritone-guitars\">baritone guitars<\/a> that Flip had built, with a late \u201960s Teisco pickup and an early \u201970s DeArmond Dynasonic pickup. It had a blend knob between the two pickups, so rather than a switch, you can find or blend continuously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked Flip to do the same thing for my guitar. He had the same pickups flying around because he collects them, and he made me that blend thing. Whereas <em>Environments <\/em>feels like an old garden growing wild \u2013 beautiful and unpredictable things can happen. There\u2019s a sense of impermanence I can hear in that music; it\u2019s this way right now, but next time it might be different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited that we\u2019ve found the feeling and the integrity of each of these environments individually. What happens when we take it all apart and put it back together again in some other way?
