Today, we\u2019re going to get deep in the pocket and groove along to something seriously funky.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of Prince or The Fearless Flyers, you\u2019re in for a real treat. Donnie Laudicina knows a thing or two about funk guitar, and he\u2019s here to give you a free lesson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This is a performance piece from Pickup Music\u2019s Groove Learning Pathway<\/a> (the name speaks for itself). Here\u2019s how to play it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start by playing the open E string.<\/li>\n<li>Place your middle finger on the 7th fret of the A string.<\/li>\n<li>Index finger on the 6th fret of the D string.<\/li>\n<li>Ring finger on the 7th fret of the G string.<\/li>\n<li>Pinky on the 8th fret of both the B and high E strings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"g-triad-slide\">G triad slide<\/h2>\n<p>Next, you\u2019ll play a G triad shape, slide it up two frets, and then slide back down to the original G position.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the diagram for the G triad:<\/p>\n<p><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"http:\/\/guitarmadrid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/G-guitar-funk-chord-shape-diagram.jpg\" class=\"lazyload\" width=\"648\"><\/img><figcaption>Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Index finger on the 3rd fret of the high E string.<\/li>\n<li>Middle finger should be on the 4th fret of the G string.<\/li>\n<li>Ring finger goes on the 5th fret of the D string.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Strum this shape and slide it up two frets (to the 5th, 6th, and 7th frets, respectively) and then slide it back down to the original position.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"single-note-line\">Single-note line<\/h2>\n<p>The single-note line adds melodic interest to the riff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to play it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slide up to the 9th fret on the D string.<\/li>\n<li>Move down to the 5th fret on the D string.<\/li>\n<li>Play the 7th fret on the D string.<\/li>\n<li>End on the 7th fret of the A string.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"combine-them\">Combine them!<\/h2>\n<p>Practice each part individually, and once you\u2019re comfortable, connect them into one funky sequence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Try to make the whole loop sound laid-back but still tight. Once you\u2019ve mastered it, move on to the next section.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-section-variations\">A-section variations<\/h2>\n<p>The section you just learned plays around four times. It\u2019s the same basic riff, just with a few tweaks to keep things interesting.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"single-note-line-variation\">Single-note line variation<\/h2>\n<p>The second time around, you play a different lick. But the fourth time doesn\u2019t end in a single-note line. Instead, we do this little funky little walk-up.<\/p>\n<p>[either tabs or 4 separate chord diagrams]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>It\u2019s a tricky one, but you\u2019ve got it!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"b-section\">B section<\/h2>\n<p>Okay, now for a shift in dynamics. There may be some unfamiliar chord shapes here, so take time to familiarize your fingers with them before trying it at full tempo.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a9-shape\">A9 Shape<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>This is a tasty chord. The A9 adds a jazzy flavor to the funk rhythm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"http:\/\/guitarmadrid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/A9-guitar-chord.jpg\" class=\"lazyload\" width=\"648\"><\/img><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Place your middle finger on the 12th fret of the A string.<\/li>\n<li>Start by placing your index finger on the 11th fret of the D string.<\/li>\n<li>Your ring finger will bar the 12th fret of the G, B, and high E strings.<\/li>\n<li>Strum all these strings together to form the A9 chord.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"g795-chord\">G#7(#9#5) Chord<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>The chord name might look like something you accidentally butt-dialed, but don\u2019t get hung up on that! That was a lot of new chords. All that\u2019s left to learn is one more single note line \u2013\u00a0 the cherry on top!
