At the beginning of 2024, a then-17-year-old Grace Bowers couldn\u2019t have imagined she\u2019d drop her uber-vintage, all-conquering debut record, Wine on Venus \u2013 <\/em>and she definitely didn\u2019t think she\u2019d be one of Guitar World<\/em>\u2019s guitarists of the year.<\/p>\n

But here she is, now 18, having accomplished all that (and more). \u201cOh, man,\u201d Bowers says. \u201cI don\u2019t even want to know who else is on that list because I\u2019m probably not worthy to be listed next to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bowers has earned it. There\u2019d been buzz about her before she broke out, but Wine on Venus<\/em> confirmed she\u2019s here to stay. She\u2019s made no bones about her love for classic rock and blues, and despite her vintage-inspired cover of Led Zeppelin\u2019s Going to California<\/em>, she\u2019s got other places to go. \u201cI feel like I\u2019ve broken out of that,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to get trapped because it\u2019s comfortable and familiar. But that\u2019s not all I want to do for the rest of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

So where will Grace Bowers go next? \u201cThe album we recorded has a throwback sound,\u201d she says. \u201cI love that, but I want to do something new now and again. But I\u2019m just taking it all as it comes. I\u2019ll always be learning. I\u2019ll still be practicing every day. But I want to eventually make another record and get more music out there. I want to keep touring and doing all this stuff. I\u2019m just gonna see where it all takes me.\u201d<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve had a hell of a year. Have you had a chance to reflect on it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cA whirlwind is a great way to describe it. Looking back on a year ago from today, I was in such a different place. What I\u2019m doing now is what I wanted to do then \u2013 and it\u2019s all happened so perfectly. I\u2019m very grateful for being thrown amazing opportunities. This is my first year, and I put a record out with my band; I\u2019ve been very lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now that you\u2019re in the thick of it, has your perception of the music industry changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve seen and experienced a lot of the ugly side. I\u2019ve had to deal with a lot of horrible people, but at the same time, I\u2019ve gotten amazing experiences. I\u2019m just more aware of what\u2019s happening than last year when I was still playing out in Nashville clubs every night, and that was my life. I\u2019m glad to have broken out of that and to have a broader outlook.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not many people have done what you\u2019ve done by their 18th birthday. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve had people cast you aside because of your age. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely. I get disrespected before I even play. People take one look at me, [see] a young female and immediately get a thought in their head of what I am, and they don\u2019t take me as seriously as they should.\u201d<\/p>\n

There should be mutual respect, regardless of age.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor the most part, I feel that way. I feel equal. But there\u2019s been a lot of times when I feel disrespected or lesser, which is not cool. At the same time, being young and a girl is an advantage. There\u2019s a lot of other people who are in that position, so I view it as an advantage \u2013 and a disadvantage.\u201d<\/p>\n
